From the CLAE Dean

Jocelyn M. Boryczka
Jocelyn Boryczka, College of Liberal Arts & Education Dean

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this website that facilitates the work of shared governance bodies in the College of Liberal Arts & Education.

The work of this University is a responsibility that is shared among its many constituent parts. By tradition, practice and reason the central work of the university is to facilitate learning and to create new knowledge. Perhaps a more simple way to say this is the university is concerned most with teaching, learning and research.

This core function of the university is best guided by the mutual collaboration of what we often call “the faculty” and “the administration.” What is shared is responsibility for these core functions. Shared governance is simply a structure, or a formalization, of mechanisms by which the University does its most important work. By creating structures, we insure that we are partners and collaborators as we mutually support each other.

I invite you to explore these pages that are dedicated to the College’s shared governance.

It is an exciting time to be within CLAE. With the arrival of our new Dean, Jocelyn Boryczka, our college is embracing the value of radical hospitality and the strength of our diversity. We are forging ahead to educate students and to give witness to the value of the liberal arts in a complex society. To do this, we must enact our values daily, which is one of the reasons why we govern collectively. Faculty and administration mutually inform and shape each other’s ideas, and out of this collaboration we make decisions that promote excellence in teaching, productive research and scholarship, and encourage meaningful partnerships with our communities. We hope you will see yourself within this shared governance structure and join in the excitement of all that is to come within our college!
